PNM Tobago Council supports the rule of law on the Friendship Connector Road construction
Scarborough, Tobago – July 9th, 2025 – In light of the High Court’s decision to lift the injunction halting the Shirvan Bypass/Connector Road construction, the PNM Tobago Council today issued a media release acknowledging the court’s ruling.
The party reiterated its clear support for the road construction, recognizing it as an integral part of the wider ANR Robinson International Airport development project. However, the PNM Tobago Council emphasized its unwavering stance that the rule of law and due processes must always be followed in such undertakings. The party noted that the “green light” given yesterday to continue with the project is “no victory for the THA,” urging the Tobago House of Assembly to abide by all court decisions until the substantive legal matter is fully resolved.
The initial injunction was granted after Derek Hearn, a resident of Friendship Estate, claimed that the ongoing construction had caused damage to his property and lacked necessary approvals. This ongoing legal and political discussion highlights the complexities surrounding major infrastructure projects in Tobago.
