Operation Gulfstream Updates: TEMA Director Discusses Successful Towing and Fisherfolk Compensation

TEMA director Allan Stewart discusses the towing of the Gulfstream vessel.

Scarborough, Tobago – August 23, 2024 – The Gulfstream barge was successfully towed to Port of Spain yesterday (August 22, 2024) after months of cleaning and extracting hydrocarbons from the vessel. Director of the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA), Allan Stewart, discussed the conclusion of Operation Gulfstream now that the vessel has been salvaged.

Stewart also addressed ongoing concerns about compensation to the island’s fisherfolk. His comments highlight the end of one phase of the oil spill disaster—the removal of the vessel—while pointing to the next major challenge: ensuring affected residents and businesses receive the financial support they need to recover.
