Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago – The United National Congress (UNC) is forming a coalition with smaller political parties and trade unions to challenge the ruling PNM in the 2025 general election. UNC leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has described it as a “coalition of interests.”
The group includes the Progressive Empowerment Party (PEP), the Movement for National Development (MND), the Congress of the People (COP), and unions like the OWTU and PSA. Persad-Bissessar believes this coalition is stronger than the 2010 People’s Partnership, with more time to build solid alliances. Trade union leader Ancel Roget explained that the unions’ support comes from the public’s growing distress. COP interim leader Kirk Sinnette is also hopeful about the coalition’s potential. The HOPE party, led by Timothy Hamel-Smith, did not attend the meeting due to scheduling conflicts, although it was initially slated to be there.
