MP Stuart Young Chosen to Succeed Dr. Keith Rowley When He Resigns as Prime Minister

Orange Hill, Tobago – January 6, 2025 – Minister Stuart Young has been selected to succeed Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley, who plans to resign in the coming months. The announcement was made this afternoon at a villa in Plantations Estate following the conclusion of a two-day Cabinet retreat. Dr. Rowley stated that a few matters still require his attention before he officially hands over the reins to Minister Young.

The announcement comes as the PNM prepares to screen candidates for the Tobago East and West seats. Dr. Rowley stated that while he will remain the PNM’s political leader and oversee preparations for the general elections, he plans to step down at a yet-to-be-determined date. Reflecting on his 45 years in public service, Dr. Rowley recounted starting as a grass planter at Hope Farm before rising through the ranks to enter politics. He expressed concern over the degeneration of societal values, particularly the declining respect for public officials, and hinted that ongoing criticism has taken a personal toll on both him and his family. After making the announcement, Dr. Rowley expressed confidence in the next generation, stating his belief in a cadre of young people ready to lead the nation forward. Speaking in a somber tone, he thanked the country for their support throughout his career and dropped hints about the potential timing of the upcoming general election. Dr. Rowley ended the press conference without taking questions from the media relating to his intended resignation.
