Martinique Officially Joins CARICOM as Seventh Associate Member

July 6, 2026 — In a historic milestone for regional integration, the French overseas collectivity of Martinique has formally taken its seat as the seventh Associate Member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) during the 51st Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government in Saint Lucia.

The membership officially entered into force on June 16, 2026, following the formal submission of the Instrument of Accession to the CARICOM Secretariat by the Government of the French Republic. This legal milestone activated the Agreement on the Privileges and Immunities of CARICOM, culminating years of diplomatic negotiations and bridging the institutional divide between the French-speaking territory and the broader Caribbean Community. Reconnecting with the Caribbean Basin and Unlocking Economic Partnerships

Martinique’s formal entry marks a significant evolution in Caribbean diplomacy and cross-border cooperation:

Bridging Linguistic and Economic Spheres: The inclusion of Martinique provides a strategic commercial and cultural gateway linking CARICOM with the French-speaking Caribbean, the European Union, the Americas, and Africa.

Reconnecting with the Caribbean Home: Addressing regional leaders at the summit’s opening ceremony, President of the Executive Council of Martinique Serge Letchimy declared that Martinique is “reconnecting with our common home: the Caribbean,” emphasizing that the priority now shifts to converting institutional membership into tangible business partnerships, private investment, and cross-border mobility.

Strengthening Regional Resilience: CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett and outgoing Chairman Dr. Terrance Drew welcomed Martinique’s accession, noting that expanding the Community’s footprint strengthens collective bargaining power and enables shared technical solutions for regional challenges like climate change, maritime connectivity, and natural disaster recovery.
