Scarborough, Tobago – Residents of the Lambeau Community are still grappling with the significant and persistent impact of the Gulfstream oil spill, which occurred on February 7th when the vessel overturned and shipwrecked on a reef near Cove, leaking oil.
Despite the government’s efforts in successfully decanting the oil from the ship and ongoing work to salvage the wreckage, the residents of Lambeau contend that their problems are far from over. They reported a range of ongoing issues, from pockets of oil continuously resurfacing in their area to struggles in repairing damaged vessels, mounting health concerns, and substantial loss of business. These issues were prominently shared at a consultation for compensation held on Monday, highlighting the long-term challenges faced by the community.
