On International Day of Peace 2023, Tobago joined global efforts to promote harmony and understanding. Shelly-Ann John, manager of the Community Mediation Centre, expressed her hope that Trinidad and Tobago would acquire a Peace Bell, similar to those found in countries like Australia and Japan. She believes such a bell would be beneficial, even in workplace settings, for resolving conflicts.
Assemblyman Sonny Craig also attended the day’s events, offering insightful words at a mural painting ceremony. He underscored the importance of maintaining peace, emphasizing that even when provoked, the challenge lies in fostering peace and goodwill within our communities.
During an interview, Manager Shelly-Ann John revealed that peace murals had been installed at both Signal Hill Secondary School and Speyside High School in Tobago. When asked about the significance of these murals, she explained that placing hands on the mural symbolizes a personal commitment to taking action for peace.
The celebration of the International Day of Peace directly contributes to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, which universally aim to foster a culture of peace. Tobago’s participation highlights its dedication to promoting harmony and conflict resolution within its communities.
