Preliminary fingerprinting reports by the IMA indicate hydrocarbon discharge affecting Tobago is intermediate fuel oil
Scarborough, Tobago – February 23, 2024 – The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries (MEEI) has reported that the hydrocarbon discharge affecting Tobago’s southeast coast has been identified as ‘intermediate fuel oil.’ This crucial finding comes from preliminary fingerprinting reports submitted by the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA), confirming the nature of the substance involved in the recent oil spill.
Samples were meticulously taken from various locations, including the shoreline at Canoe Bay, 200 meters from the overturned vessel, and directly near the vessel. Analysis using ‘Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)’ revealed that the hydrocarbon discharge is consistent with refined oil characteristics.
