Scarborough, Tobago – June 13, 2024 – With the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) budget statement expected to be read by the end of June, the political leader of the Unity of the People, Nickocy Phillips, is publicly questioning how the THA plans to fund a Tobago police force.
Chief Secretary Farley Augustine had announced last month that a community-based police force would be part of building out a Department of Public Safety within the THA. However, Phillips is concerned about how this significant initiative will impact the Assembly’s financial management, which is already strained by its current financial resources. His questions highlight the critical need for a transparent and sustainable funding strategy for Tobago’s proposed police force.
