Gary Griffith, leader of the National Transformation Alliance (NTA), has condemned Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar for rejecting a CARICOM policy initiative to classify certain firearm crimes as acts of terrorism. This proposal, outlined by Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley during the CARICOM conference in Barbados on February 21st, aims to address the changing nature of crime, particularly indiscriminate shootings in public spaces. Griffith criticised Persad-Bissessar for dismissing the initiative as a “PR gimmick” and reminded her that she had previously supported it during a town hall meeting. He called her rejection “irresponsible” and “dangerous,” stressing that classifying these crimes as terrorism is about saving lives, not politics. Griffith warned that Persad-Bissessar’s stance raises serious concerns about her leadership and questioned her ability to work with regional leaders if she gained office.
