Fishermen Blame T&T Salvage for New Oil Spill Near Crown Point, Tobago
Tobago Fishermen blame T&T salvage for ignoring advice and removing oil booms after oil was detected near Crown Point.
Crown Point, Tobago – June 15, 2024 – The All Tobago Fisherfolk Association is accusing T&T Salvage of removing an oil boom against their advice, a decision they believe has led to new oil being detected in waters near Crown Point. Fishermen reported encountering oil in the water yesterday (June 13, 2024) while catching bait.
The oil is believed to have originated from the Gulfstream shipwreck on a reef near Cove, the site of the significant February 7th oil spill. The Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries had engaged the international company T&T Salvage to decant the bunker fuel from the wreck and salvage the vessel to prevent further contamination of the area. This new development highlights ongoing concerns about the effectiveness of cleanup and containment strategies for the Tobago oil spill.
