Tobago Urged to “Eat Local”

In late 2023, following the disruption of the vital MV Cabo Star ferry service, Dr. Faith B.Yisrael, Deputy Chief Secretary and Secretary of Health, Wellness, and Social Protection for Tobago, issued a compelling call to action. She urged Tobagonians to significantly invest in eating local food to help mitigate the food shortages caused by the cargo vessel’s temporary absence.

The MV Cabo Star, a crucial roll-on/roll-off ship for transferring cargo and food supplies between Trinidad and Tobago, caught fire after departing the Port of Scarborough on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, rendering it inoperable for a period. This incident directly impacted the availability of goods on the island.

“Our shelves are suffering,” stated Dr. Faith B.Yisrael, highlighting the immediate effects on Tobago’s food supply. In response to the disruption, the Deputy Chief Secretary noted that the Tobago Agribusiness Development Company (TADCO) had capitalized on its resources to meet Tobagonians’ needs, demonstrating local resilience.

She further clarified that the challenge wasn’t a lack of overall food resources, but rather a preference among citizens for imported items over available local produce. At that time, the Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago was implementing temporary solutions to assist with the transportation of cargo.
