Scarborough, Tobago – January 19th, 2024 – Representatives from the Department of Marine Resources and Fisheries (DMRF), the Tobago Unified Fisherfolk Association (TUFA), and the All Tobago Fisherfolk Association (ATFA) met yesterday, Thursday, January 18th, 2024, with officials from BG International and BP Exploration Operating Company Limited. The crucial discussion focused on the potential impact of the companies’ latest seismic survey on Tobago’s fishing communities.

The energy companies had applied to the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) for approval (CEC 6773/2023) to conduct a 3D seismic survey in Blocks 25a, 25b, and 27 in the Deepwater of the East Coast Marine Area.

The meeting, held at the Buccoo Integrated Facility, served as a platform for stakeholders to express concerns and seek clarity regarding the seismic activities. The Division remains committed to fostering open dialogue among all parties involved, ensuring a transparent process that contributes to the sustainable development and well-being of Tobago’s natural resources and the livelihoods of its fishers.
