Cabinet Removes Gun Amnesty Regulation From State Of Emergency Powers

Cabinet has agreed to remove a gun amnesty regulation from the Emergency Powers Regulations, which were part of the ongoing State of Emergency. The clause, which had never been enacted, has now been revoked. The regulation, published in December 2024, would have offered protection from prosecution for people surrendering firearms, ammunition, or explosives. However, the Attorney General’s office clarified that the regulation was never operationalized and did not take effect. All firearms recovered so far under the State of Emergency have been seized by law enforcement, not surrendered. Cabinet has approved the amended regulations, confirming that the Government does not support firearms amnesties. The amended regulations, published in the Gazette yesterday, remain in force to ensure public safety.
