Blind Welfare Association Supports Government Ban on Noisy Fireworks

August 19,2025 – The Trinidad and Tobago Blind Welfare Association (TTBWA) has expressed strong support for the government’s recent decision to cancel the Independence Day parade and ban traditional fireworks, calling it a meaningful step toward greater inclusion and safety for vulnerable citizens.

While the decision has drawn criticism from opposition figures and some members of the public, the TTBWA says it addresses a long-standing concern for the visually impaired, for whom sound is a critical tool for navigation and awareness. According to Executive Officer Kenneth Suratt, sudden loud explosions—often louder than 115 decibels—can cause severe disorientation, anxiety, and limit mobility.

The ban, confirmed by Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander, also considers the well-being of animals, infants, and elderly citizens. Authorities cited additional security concerns under the current State of Emergency, noting that the sound of fireworks can be mistaken for gunfire, leading to unnecessary panic.

While silent fireworks will still be permitted for private use, the TTBWA is encouraging citizens to embrace the shift. The group says it’s a move toward a more inclusive society—one that prioritizes the dignity and safety of all its members during national celebrations.
