Tobago Oil Spill: Closer to Identifying Vessel Owner
T.H.A. says they are conducting their own investigations to determine the ownership of Gulfstream
Scarborough, Tobago – February 20, 2024 – During the ongoing oil spill clean-up operation in Tobago, a crucial question remains: “Who owns the Gulfstream wreck stranded near Cove Estate, which is leaking a fuel-like substance?” The Ministry of National Security is actively working to identify the owner of both the barge and the Solo Creed tugboat involved in towing it.
Chief Secretary Farley Augustine emphasized that the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) is conducting its own independent search efforts parallel to the Ministry’s. While some information regarding the vessel remains undisclosed, the THA has successfully acquired the Gulfstream vessel schematics to enhance containment strategies. Augustine also highlighted the possibility of illicit activities linked to the vessel.
The THA’s investigation specifically focuses on identifying the exact nature of the fuel-like substance leaking. Initial insights from tests conducted by the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA) have been obtained. The ultimate aim is to secure a pristine sample from inside the ship for comprehensive oil fingerprinting, ensuring uncontaminated results to definitively trace the source of the Tobago oil spill.
