Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago – January 3, 2025 – The United States has recently issued a travel advisory against Trinidad and Tobago. According to the advisory, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago declared a nationwide State of Emergency (SOE) on December 30th, 2024, in response to rising criminal activity. U.S. citizens should expect a stronger police and military presence throughout the country.
The advisory also states that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is authorized to arrest suspects, conduct searches, and detain without bail, with similar powers granted to the Defence Force. Due to the SOE, U.S. Government personnel are restricted from certain areas, including Laventille, Beetham, Sea Lots, Cocorite, and the interior of Queens’ Park Savannah. They are also advised to avoid certain locations after dark, including beaches, Downtown Port of Spain, Fort George, and Queen’s Park Savannah.
