Unregulated Tourism Activity Threatening The Health Of Bon Accord Lagoon
Scarborough, Tobago – February 2nd, 2024 – On World Wetlands Day 2024, observed under the theme “Wetlands and Human Wellbeing,” concerns were sharply raised about the state of Tobago’s crucial ecosystems. While wetlands globally serve as vital breeding grounds for fish, absorb carbon emissions, protect coastlines from rough seas, and offer natural revenue sources for tourism, Tobago’s most economically beneficial wetland, the Bon Accord Lagoon, is currently under severe threat.
In a special feature, reporter Kandace Jackson provided insights into the challenges facing this precious resource. The primary concern is unregulated and unmonitored activity within the lagoon, which directly impacts its ecological health and long-term sustainability.
The Bon Accord Lagoon is a cornerstone of Tobago’s natural heritage and economy, but its value is being jeopardized by practices that contribute to its degradation. This report underscores the urgent need for enhanced environmental protection and sustainable tourism practices to preserve Tobago’s wetlands for future generations and ensure their continued contribution to both ecological balance and human well-being.
