TTPS Has Crime Under Control

Commissioner of Police Erla Harewood Christopher says drugs, guns, and gangs are fuelling violent crimes in Trinidad and Tobago

Today, Trinidad and Tobago Police Service’s Commissioner of Police, Erla Harewood-Christopher, assured the country that despite the upsurge in violent crime in Trinidad and Tobago, the police have crime under control.

During a TTPS media briefing, the top COP said the prevalence of drugs, gangs and guns is the problem. ACP Criminal Division, Vena Butler said 59% of the murders in 2024 thus far are gang-related.

While dismantling gangs in the country is the ultimate goal of the TTPS, Butler said in the short term, they will continue to disrupt all gang-related activities. The TTPS is also taking a proactive approach through its Community Policing Unit.

The TTPS believes turning people away from crime is their first responsibility.
