TTNCPTA responds to school violence

The Trinidad and Tobago National Council of Parent Teacher Associations (TTNCPTA) has issued a strong response following a disturbing incident at Signal Hill Secondary School, where a video surfaced showing a female student being physically assaulted by peers within a classroom.

President of the TTNCPTA, Mr. Walter Stewart, released a statement today condemning the recent violent incident at the Tobago school. Stewart expressed deep concern over the increasing involvement of female students in violent acts within educational settings.

In an interview, Stewart proposed the establishment of a female counterpart to the existing Male Leadership and Transformation (MILAT) program, aimed at addressing behavioral issues among female students. He emphasized the urgent need for enhanced leadership and supervision within schools, particularly advocating for training programs for principals and senior teachers before they assume their roles.

Stewart highlighted Signal Hill Secondary School’s achievements in academics, noting their recent successes at the CSEC and CAPE levels, including the development of a mobile app by sixth form students. Despite the recent incident, he praised these accomplishments and affirmed that the actions of a minority should not overshadow the positive contributions of high achievers.

Reaffirming the TTNCPTA’s zero-tolerance policy towards behaviors that tarnish a school’s reputation, Stewart emphasized that schools should serve as sanctuaries for learning and character development. He urged all students across Trinidad and Tobago to uphold standards of behavior that reflect patriotism and contribute positively to society.

The TTNCPTA remains committed to collaborating with schools, parents, and relevant authorities to foster a safe and conducive learning environment. Ongoing discussions with stakeholders aim to implement effective strategies to prevent future incidents and promote a culture of respect and responsibility among students.
