TTMS Warns: Prepare Now As Above-Average Hurricane Season Approaches
May 7, 2025 – The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) is sounding the alarm as the Hurricane Season approaches, warning citizens and key stakeholders to begin immediate preparations. The official hurricane season begins on June 1 and runs through November, with peak activity expected between mid-August and mid-October. During this time, the region faces a heightened risk of tropical depressions, storms, and full-fledged hurricanes, any of which could pose a direct threat to Tobago. Forecasters are predicting an above-average season, with 19 named storms expected. Of those, nine are projected to reach hurricane strength, and four could escalate into major hurricanes, Category 3 or higher. This forecast highlights the need for disaster readiness across all sectors. The TTMS also reminds the public that May is recognised as National Disaster Prevention and Preparedness Month, making it an ideal time to review emergency plans, secure property, and ensure families are ready for any potential weather threat.
