Being the Secretary of Tourism, Culture, Antiquities, and Transportation was not enough to spare Councillor Tashia Burris from CAL’s massive flight cancellations on Sunday. She is in New York for the Tobago Day activities. Burris claimed there was not much she was able to do, other than help arrange transport from the airport to the port for stranded passengers in Tobago. Meanwhile, she noted that CAL had little empathy for Tobagonians caught in the mele.
It is a situation that frustrated the Tourism Secretary greatly. In previous communications, CAL said they are unable to increase flights because of financial constraints. Yet the airline is expanding its fleet of aircraft and embarking on new routes. Burris blames the central government, which is CAL’s major stakeholder for not doing more for Tobago.
Among her concerns is the lack of representatives from Tobago and the THA on the board of CAL. Burris reminded the government and the airline that for Tobagonians, the airbridge is a necessity, not a vehicle for a vacation. Tobago Updates is awaiting a response from the Head of CAL’s Corporate Communications, Dionne Ligourre to address concerns about the airline’s policies and challenges relating to the Tobagonians and the airbridge.
