Tobago Urged To Stay Alert As Regional Tensions Flare
September 19, 2025- Tobago is keeping a close watch on regional security following major military exercises by Venezuela on its Caribbean island of La Orchila this week.
The Bolivarian National Armed Forces conducted the “Sovereign Caribbean 200” drills, featuring live fire exercises, amphibious armoured vehicles, warships, artillery, and anti-aircraft systems. Thousands of aero-naval troops were deployed, and a Caribbean Task Force was formally established to strengthen Venezuela’s regional presence.
Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino López said the country had “turned its back” on the Caribbean for too long, a situation he stated could no longer continue. The exercises come amid heightened tensions with the United States over military activity in nearby waters.
While Tobago is located south of the operations, security experts note that the display underscores shifting regional power dynamics and the need for vigilance. Chief Secretary Farley Augustine told reporters on Tuesday that the situation does not pose a direct threat to Tobago, but he is monitoring developments closely.
