Tobago to Celebrate Independence with Prayer, Culture, and Community Spirit Amid State of Emergency

August 27, 2025 – With national Independence Day festivities scaled back due to the ongoing State of Emergency, Tobago will mark August 31 with a day centred on unity, reflection, and celebration of local culture.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced the cancellation of the traditional national parade and fireworks display, citing continued security concerns. In response, the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) has rolled out an alternative line-up of events under the theme “A Day of Prayer, Community and Celebration.”

The day kicks off at 6 a.m. in Scarborough with a 5K road race and cycling competition. Family-friendly activities will continue throughout the day, including a fun zone with powerboat and goat racing, a multi-faith service at Shaw Park Complex, and the D’LIME Gospel Concert at the Scarborough Library Amphitheatre. The celebrations will close with an open-air movie night at the Botanical Gardens.

According to a release from the Office of the Chief Secretary, the programme was designed to uphold the spirit of Independence while promoting national pride, togetherness, and cultural appreciation across the island.
