Tobago Oil Spill Clean Up Efforts

The Chief Secretary provided updates on the cleanup efforts of the oil spill following the overturning of a vessel in the vicinity of Canoe Bay. He said the process of cleaning up the spill is ongoing and the incident is being classified as a Tier II disaster.

On Thursday (February 8th), Chief Secretary Hon. Farley Augustine addressed the media, along with Tobago Emergency Management Agency director Allan Stewart and Infrastructure’s Secretary Assemblyman Trevor James.

The Chief Secretary provided updates on the cleanup efforts of the oil spill following the overturning of a vessel in the vicinity of Canoe Bay. He said the process of cleaning up the spill is ongoing and the incident is being classified as a Tier II disaster.

TEMA Director Allan Stewart shared that while several stakeholders are working together to clean up the oil spill, the cost of the disaster is still unknown. Infrastructure’s Secretary Assemblyman Trevor James indicated specialised equipment would be needed for the cleanup that is currently not available on the island.

Chief Secretary Farley told the media proper protocol would be followed to contain the oil spill and minimize environmental harm. The press conference took place at the Scarborough Lay-by (Stage by the sea).
