Tobago Business Chamber Wants Measures to Reduce Crime: Calls for Port Scanners & Increased Security

Tobago Business Chamber wants T.H.A. budget to focus on crime fighting measures.

Scarborough, Tobago – June 22, 2024 – Ahead of Monday’s Tobago House of Assembly (THA) budget statement, the Chairman of the Tobago Business Chamber, Martin George, expressed his hope for a strong focus on crime and security.

While acknowledging that Tobago’s crime situation has not deteriorated as severely as in Trinidad, George noted rising concerns about the increase in illegal drugs and guns on the island. The Chamber stated it has repeatedly called for specific measures to counter this, including vehicle scanners at both ports, the deployment of sniffer dogs, and the presence of undercover police officers on the ferry who are equipped with lists and photos of wanted criminals. These proposals aim to enhance border security and mitigate the inflow of illicit items, crucial for reducing crime in Tobago.
