THTA PRESS RELEASE – OIL SPILL OFF SOUTH-EASTERN SIDE OF ISLAND

Scarborough, Tobago – February 9th, 2024 – In response to the unfolding oil spill off the coast of Cove Estate, on the south-eastern side of the island, the Tobago Hotel & Tourism Association (THTA) has issued a statement expressing its deep concern about the environmental impact and potential consequences for local communities and the vital tourism industry.

The THTA acknowledged that the spill has the potential to raise significant environmental and economic challenges for Tobago. As such, the association confirmed it is actively monitoring the situation. It extended commendation to the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) and other local authorities for their swift response and applauded their efforts to mitigate the effects this oil spill could have on Tobago’s delicate ecosystem.

The association also affirmed its readiness to collaborate with local authorities, environmental agencies, and other stakeholders to effectively address and mitigate the effects of this unfortunate incident. It pledged to maintain continuous communication with relevant authorities, ensuring readiness to provide support in any way possible to aid in the cleanup efforts.
