The Quandary of Tobago’s Tourism

Scarborough, TobagoTobago is widely recognized as a coveted tourism destination, cherished for its pristine, unspoiled nature and vibrant, rich culture. While these inherent characteristics lay a strong foundation for a thriving tourism industry, Reuben Clement, Director of Tour Tobago, believes the island is far from achieving its true potential.

Clement contends that government actions are inadvertently undermining efforts to grow tourism. He specifically points to a significant drop in tourist arrivals over the years, attributing this “crash” to several critical factors. A major impediment highlighted is the consistent unreliability of transportation to Tobago.

Recognizing this pressing issue, Chief Secretary Farley Augustine recently hosted a special town hall meeting dedicated to addressing inter-island travel challenges and devising sustainable solutions.

The inconsistency of air travel to Tobago places the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) in a difficult position when determining the optimal level of investment in marketing Tobago. Despite the island’s immense appeal, the unreliable transport link directly impacts its ability to attract and accommodate more visitors.

There is hope that the recent establishment of the Tourism Transportation Agency, involving various key stakeholders, will lead to significant improvements in connectivity. However, Clement expressed his lament that Tobago, despite its undeniable allure, remains a destination brimming with untapped potential waiting to be fully realized.
