Tobago Advances Marine Resilience with Focus on Protecting Fishing Industry
Secretary for The Division Of Food Security talks about restoring coral reefs
Scarborough, Tobago – Natisha Charles-Pantin, Secretary for the Division of Food Security, Natural Resources, the Environment and Sustainable Development, recently shared vital insights into Tobago’s ambitious Marine Resilience Initiative on the “Tobago Updates Morning Show.”
Secretary Charles-Pantin underscored the critical importance of this initiative for Tobago’s many fisherfolk, who depend heavily on the fishing industry for their livelihoods. She emphasized that the project specifically seeks to sustain this vital industry by protecting crucial marine ecosystems. Failure to safeguard these systems, she warned, would have a grave impact on the industry’s future.
The Secretary revealed that the Division has engaged in key collaborations, including productive meetings with the Buccoo Reef Trust and the Dutch company Buccalis. Buccalis brings valuable experience in building reef systems using modular underwater structures, offering an innovative approach to marine restoration.
Furthermore, the Institute of Marine Affairs (IMA), along with numerous other partners, is actively involved in this initiative. Their collective effort is focused on experimenting with the science of restoring and rehabilitating coral reefs around Tobago, aiming to enhance the island’s marine biodiversity and protect its vital natural resources. This multi-stakeholder approach highlights Tobago’s commitment to long-term marine sustainability.
