Scarborough, Tobago – July 17, 2025 – The Tobago House of Assembly (THA), via a media release today, stated that an ongoing influx of Sargassum seaweed is impacting several coastal areas across the island. While more significant arrivals are anticipated in the coming days, Tobago’s beaches remain open as comprehensive cleanup operations continue.
The THA’s Division of Tourism has confirmed that all affected beaches are accessible to the public, with cleanup efforts being carried out by multiple divisions, including the Unemployment Relief Programme (URP) and other internal teams. These operations are expected to continue without additional expenditure or staffing changes.
The Sargassum influx is a natural phenomenon affecting the Caribbean basin, and key tourism areas are being closely monitored. The Division of Food Security, Natural Resources, the Environment and Sustainable Development is overseeing the overall response, ensuring the island’s natural beauty and tourism appeal are maintained.
To help manage the situation, the Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) deployed a drone on Wednesday, July 16th. This flight enabled them to assess the extent of seaweed presence and determine where to concentrate their cleanup efforts for Tobago’s Sargassum management.
