New Traffic Rules: Penalties and Demerit Points Reduced for Drivers

Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago – Good news for drivers: the Ministry of Works and Transport has made it easier on your wallet and your license. Changes to the country’s traffic laws went into effect on November 18th, 2024, reducing penalties and demerit points for several violations.
Here’s a simple breakdown of the changes:
Traffic Signs and Orders: The fixed penalty for these violations is now $500 (down from $1,000), and you’ll get 2 demerit points (down from 3).
Parking Violations: For illegal parking, the penalty is now $500 with 2 demerit points.
Vehicle Equipment: If your vehicle has issues like a missing silencer, you’ll get 2 demerit points (down from 3), while the fine stays the same.
Disability Parking: New rules are in place. If you use an altered or expired permit, you face a $2,000 fine and 3 demerit points.
The Ministry says these updates are designed to improve road safety and make the rules easier to follow.
