August 25, 2025 -Former Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley has issued a sharp rebuke of the UNC-led Government’s support for the deployment of U.S. military forces in the Caribbean, warning that it puts both Trinidad and Tobago’s sovereignty and CARICOM unity at risk.
In a Facebook statement, Dr. Rowley criticised the government for dismissing regional solidarity by declaring that “each member state can speak for themselves.” He argued that this undermines decades of collective Caribbean diplomacy, including peace-building efforts with Venezuela through the Montevideo and Arnos Vale agreements.
Rowley also condemned the government’s pledge to allow U.S. access to local territory if Venezuela were to move against Guyana, saying the decision risks diplomatic fallout and was made without public or parliamentary input.
“Crime is real, but foreign warships won’t solve corruption or institutional failure,” he said, accusing the administration of sacrificing national independence for closer ties with Washington.
