Veterinarian Dr. Paul Crooks has noted that the surge in inflation is affecting not only people but also animals’ quality of life. The sharp increase in the cost of veterinary medication has raised concerns. Dr. Crooks also highlighted the disparity between Trinidad and Tobago, emphasising that Tobago has significantly fewer veterinarians in comparison.
Dr. Crooks pointed out that veterinarians often lack a business perspective as many enter vet school driven by a genuine passion for animals. Consequently, they may be reluctant to negotiate the expenses associated with animal medical care. Crooks noted that while the ministry does offer support for animals, the emphasis is primarily on agricultural animals rather than domestic ones.
Dr. Crooks has indicated that the TTVA (Trinidad and Tobago Veterinary Association) alerted the Ministry of Health about instances where people are buying and misusing veterinary prescription medication. He also noted that veterinarians in Tobago are not fully aligned with modern technologies.
The President of TTVA has stated that the country is undergoing a transformative journey to enact regulations and encourage the proper utilisation of veterinary medicine.
