Request for New Inter-Island Cargo Vessel

NIDCO issues a request for a new inter-island cargo vessel to replace the Cabo Star

Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago – The National Infrastructure Development Company Limited (NIDCO) has initiated a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the design and construction of a new monohull inter-island cargo vessel. The deadline for submitting proposals was set on May 10th, 2024.

A press release from NIDCO indicates the vessel must be completed by December 2026. Specifications for the new ferry are comprehensive, including 200 VIP recliner seats and 40 en-suite passenger cabins. For cargo, it must provide ample space for trucks, trailers, and dangerous cargo, all in compliance with the Trinidad and Tobago Shipping Act. While primarily intended for inter-island travel between Trinidad and Tobago, the vessel may also undertake international voyages. It should accommodate a maximum of 24 crew members and be suitable for various cargo types while adhering to all relevant compliance regulations.

The current inter-island cargo seabridge service has been managed by the Cabo Star since July 2017, a vessel leased through the Bridgemans Service Group to the government of Trinidad and Tobago. This new acquisition effort aligns with a promise made by the current administration in 2017 to acquire a new, specially built cargo ferry following disruptions to the Seabridge.
