Pacific Islands call for more Caribbean countries to sign fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty; CS Farley Augustine commits to reducing reliance on fossil fuels

June 6, 2024 – Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are urging all SIDS to adopt the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty as a crucial step to move away from fossil fuels. Antigua and Barbuda notably became the first Caribbean nation to sign this treaty at the recent SIDS4 conference in Antigua and Barbuda.

While Trinidad and Tobago’s fossil fuel-based economy faces inherent challenges with this transition, Tobago is making small steps to align with the treaty’s principles. This initiative highlights the growing global push for climate action and the unique position of SIDS in advocating for a future less reliant on hydrocarbons amidst rising climate change impacts.
