March 25, 2025 – Trinidad and Tobago’s energy future hangs in the balance as the country faces potential fallout from a 25% tariff imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on nations with energy ties to Venezuela. This concern follows T&T’s agreement to extract natural gas from Venezuela’s Dragon fields. Against this backdrop, Prime Minister Stuart Young, met today with U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Dr. Jenifer Neidhart de Ortiz at Whitehall. The discussions focused on strengthening U.S.-T&T relations ahead of Young’s trip to Jamaica tomorrow (March 26th) for a crucial meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Minister Dr. Amery Browne also attended the meeting, alongside U.S. Embassy officials. The upcoming talks in Jamaica could determine how T&T navigates these economic pressures while maintaining its energy ambitions.
