President Supports Tobago’s Autonomy

PRESIDENT SUPPORTS TOBAGO'S AUTONOMY

Ministers, Senators, and numerous dignitaries filled the Assembly Legislature for a special sitting to welcome the inaugural visit of Her Excellency, President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Christine Kangaloo. Upon her arrival, she was welcomed by the Presiding Officer, Abby Taylor, and received a guard of honor before entering the Chambers to address the people of Tobago.

Chief Secretary Farley Augustine recently criticized the President for not discussing Tobago’s autonomy during her address at the opening of Parliament two weeks ago. President Kangaloo acknowledged the concerns but clarified that she believed Parliament was not the most suitable platform to address this matter.

She referred to Tobago’s autonomy as the most pressing issue due to the historical context of the union between Trinidad and Tobago. She emphasized that numerous legislative attempts had been made and called on both Parliament and Assembly representatives to work towards its realization. The President also dismissed any claims that Tobago’s quest for autonomy equates to cession.

Following the President’s speech, Augustine told the media that he was pleased with the President’s support.
