Port of Spain Operations Disrupted by Worker Walkout, Sea Bridge Unaffected

Worker walkout disrupts Port of Spain operations, vessel and container services suspended due to absent workforce amid wage and safety issues.

October 3, 2024 – As of Thursday morning, operations at the Port of Port of Spain remained limited due to an alleged worker walkout. On Wednesday, the port issued a statement citing a lack of a “full complement of workers,” significantly impacting its services. Workers reportedly walked out over stalled wage negotiations and critical health and safety concerns.

In an update, Port CEO Robert Ramsubhag confirmed no changes by 7 p.m. Wednesday, with limited operations still in effect. Areas affected include vessel operations and West Gate services for full and empty container handling. However, there were no disruptions on the inter-island sea bridge. The port continues to experience disruptions due to the unavailability of the full workforce.
