August 30, 2024 – With mere hours to go before the nation celebrates 62 years of Independence, Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar thanked the nation’s fore-parents for their devotion to building and developing Trinidad and Tobago’s economic, social and political pillars. Persad-Bissessar commended them for promoting values such as freedom, harmony, tolerance, and diligence.
However, Persad-Bissessar said although it is the nation’s 62nd year of Independence, the country is still linked to its colonial masters, citing challenges in the areas of finance, health, national security, poverty alleviation, education and technological advancement. Persad-Bissessar urged citizens to work to regain their sovereign decision-making power and preserve the nation’s independence. She said that serious challenges would be faced but could be surmounted once everyone works together towards a common resolve.
