Opposition Calls on PM to Retract WhatsApp Message Backing U.S. Strike, Citing Security and Diplomatic Concerns
September 3, 2025- Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles is calling on Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to immediately retract a controversial WhatsApp message in which she appeared to support a recent U.S. military strike that resulted in the deaths of 11 individuals alleged to be members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.
In a strongly worded statement, Beckles described the Prime Minister’s comments — which included the phrase “kill them all violently” — as reckless, disgraceful, and a violation of the constitutional and legal responsibilities expected from the country’s leader.
Beckles further criticized the Prime Minister’s decision to issue such a serious statement via WhatsApp, arguing that it bypasses formal media channels and avoids necessary public accountability. “This pattern of off-the-record communication is deeply troubling, especially when coming from the head of government,” she stated.
The message has reportedly caused unease across the region. According to the Associated Press, Caribbean leaders — including Barbados’ Foreign Minister Kerrie Symmonds — have raised concerns about unilateral military actions by the United States and are pushing for more coordinated diplomatic efforts within CARICOM.
The Opposition has also questioned whether Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar consulted with CARICOM leaders before publicly aligning with the U.S. strike, pointing to her past remarks indicating a “scant regard for CARICOM.”
While affirming the need for strong action against drug trafficking and organized crime, Beckles emphasized that such actions must be lawful, multilateral, and aligned with both national principles and international standards.
The Opposition concluded by demanding a full retraction of the Prime Minister’s message, a press conference to clarify her stance, and transparent communication with the public.
