Online Scams Cost Trinbagonians Millions: TTPS Urges Vigilance Against Electronic Fraud

July 25, 2025 – The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) is urging citizens to remain vigilant following a significant increase in reports of electronic fraud. Despite ongoing public advisories, the TTPS Fraud Squad has recorded 48 new cases of fraudulent activity since May 16th, 2025, resulting in significant financial losses.

The reported losses include TTD2,836,936.06,USD81,800.00, and JMD$136,699.00. The breakdown of reports by location shows: Port of Spain Office – 14, South Office – 27, Eastern Division – 4, and Tobago Division – 3.

The Head of the Fraud Squad is re-emphasizing a critical advisory: the public should not respond to any unsolicited messages or emails claiming to be from banks or other financial institutions. Citizens are being warned not to click on any links and instead verify any such claims in person at their respective banks. The TTPS strongly recommends following official policies and safety guidelines provided by financial institutions to safeguard assets and avoid becoming victims of cyber-enabled larceny in Trinidad and Tobago.
