NEW BLUE WAVE FERRY DAMAGED ON FINAL SEA TRIALS; PORT PROBES CAUSE

January 30, 2026 — A significant setback hit the inter-island sea bridge today as the MV Blue Wave Harmony, the vessel poised to revolutionize cargo and passenger transport between Trinidad and Tobago, sustained hull damage during final testing. The Port Authority of Trinidad and Tobago (PATT) confirmed that the incident occurred earlier this morning during berthing manoeuvres at the Port of Scarborough.

The vessel was undergoing its second sea trial as part of a rigorous commissioning programme intended to familiarise the crew before it entered full commercial service. Preliminary reports indicate that adverse weather conditions, characterized by strong winds and heavy rain, were major contributing factors. At the time of the impact, the vessel was being operated by an experienced captain assisted by a marine pilot, with only crew members on board.

Minister of Works and Infrastructure Jearlean John stated that while the vessel reached Tobago safely, the damage occurred as it was attempting to “push off” or berth. She confirmed that certified welders and technical experts have already been dispatched to Tobago to conduct a comprehensive damage assessment and determine a timeline for repairs.

Despite the incident, the Port Authority has assured the public that:

  • No injuries were reported among the crew.
  • The vessel is stable and secured alongside a berth in Scarborough.
  • Seabridge operations remain uninterrupted, with the APT James, T&T Spirit, and Galleons Passage continuing their scheduled sailings.

The Blue Wave Harmony, which arrived in T&T on January 22 to replace the MV Cabo Star, is highly anticipated for its 73 passenger cabins, 142-seat restaurant, and significantly expanded refrigerated cargo capacity. Officials are working to ensure the “Blue Wave” returns to its trial phase as quickly as possible to avoid any long-term disruption to the island’s supply chain
