Moratorium for deep sea mining

Heads of Government to consider a moratorium on deep sea mining at United Nations Small Island Developing States Conference May 27-30

Saint John’s, Antigua and Barbuda – All eyes will be on Antigua next week as heads of government from Trinidad and Tobago participate in the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4).

One of the critical agenda items at the conference is the consideration of a moratorium on deep-sea mining. This proposal holds significant implications as it is expected to affect the future of offshore drilling for oil and natural gas worldwide. As a Small Island Developing State with a substantial energy sector, decisions taken on this matter at SIDS4 directly concern Trinidad and Tobago’s long-term energy strategy and economic landscape.
