Tobago Mas Bandleaders Protest Reduced Prizes, Grants And Late Planning For Carnival
Scarborough, Tobago – February 5th, 2024 – As promised, Tobago Mas Bandleaders staged a protest yesterday, voicing their strong belief that they are facing unfair treatment while striving to preserve the island’s traditional Carnival. The demonstration took place outside the Division of Tourism, Culture, Antiquities, and Transportation in Sangster’s Hill.
Bandleaders expressed deep dissatisfaction with several key issues impacting their preparations for Carnival 2024, including a reduced budget, cuts to prizes and grants, and significant delayed planning. They also took the opportunity to address criticisms from some Tobagonians regarding the perceived quality of their mas presentations.
This protest highlights the ongoing financial and logistical challenges faced by mas producers in Tobago, who are advocating for greater support and recognition for their integral role in upholding the island’s vibrant Carnival culture.
Reporter Kandace Jackson was on the scene and has the full report on the grievances raised by the Tobago Mas Bandleaders during their protest.
