Lack of Action on Fireworks Legislation

LACK OF ACTION ON FIREWORKS LEGISLATION

The Fireworks Action Coalition of Trinidad and Tobago (FACTT) expresses disappointment as legislation for responsible fireworks use remains unresolved, jeopardizing citizen safety. Despite public support, recommendations from a Joint Select Committee, and the Attorney General’s commitment, FACTT noted in a press release that there is a lack of action. The organization proposes prohibiting the use of fireworks by the general population, legislating specific days and locations for fireworks, and maintaining a safe distance from sensitive areas.

FACTT highlighted the harm to individuals, animals, and livelihoods due to irresponsible use of fireworks. Despite a revised draft Bill, FACTT anticipates challenges during the Christmas season and urges the government to take decisive action to legislate safe and responsible fireworks use after two decades of inaction.
