J’Ouvert in Scarborough

J'OUVERT IN SCARBOROUGH

Last year’s Tobago Carnival faced disruptions during J’Ouvert in Crown Point. Numerous bands could not reach the stage area, prompting an early shutdown due to crowd control challenges. Consequently, the Tobago Carnival Committee, led by technical advisor Dr. Charleston Thomas, has chosen to shift major activities, including J’Ouvert, to Scarborough.

Currently, the route remains unchanged from the previous year, but the committee is receptive to input and suggestions from stakeholders. Nonetheless, attendees at the meeting expressed dissatisfaction with relocating J’Ouvert to Scarborough from Crown Point. However, Dr. Thomas clarified that this had been proposed in earlier consultations.

Meanwhile, Tele Cruz, the Band Leader for Fog Angels, disagreed, suggesting that J’Ouvert could take place in both Crown Point and Scarborough to alleviate crowd congestion in either area. Despite the objections, the decision remains firm. Dr. Thomas clarified that for the second edition of Tobago Carnival, the committee is prepared to observe the outcome of centralising activities in Scarborough. If challenges arise, they are open to exploring alternative options in 2024.
