Opposition Questions Young’s Social Media Plan

March 10, 2025 – Opposition MP Davendranath Tancoo has expressed concern over incoming Prime Minister Stuart Young’s intention to police social media. This follows statements Young made at a PNM International Women’s Day function, where he claimed that social media negatively impacts women in Trinidad and Tobago and is a threat to democracy. Tancoo has rejected Young’s plans, accusing him of wanting to legislate social media for more sinister reasons that go beyond protecting women and democracy.

Tancoo was referring to Young’s use of a derogatory term for Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar in Parliament. The clip was widely circulated on social media, and Young was later forced to apologize in Parliament for his remarks.
