On International Literacy Day 2023, Tobago joined the global community in underscoring the vital importance of literacy. Jewel Greene-George, President of the Tobago Writers Guild, highlighted how essential the ability to read is for all individuals, especially in an evolving world.
In line with the theme of International Literacy Day 2023, Greene-George shared her perspective on literacy’s crucial role in recent societal shifts. She specifically addressed how the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent transition to online learning have impacted various aspects of life, emphasizing why literacy is fundamental to navigating this new educational landscape.
At the Literacy Day Workshop and Fair, held at the Tobago Hospitality & Tourism Institute Information Research Centre, Susan Sandiford, an educator with 42 years of experience, passionately stressed the numerous benefits of reading for pleasure. She explained how recreational reading promotes cognitive progress and explored its various branches, encouraging a love for books beyond academic requirements.
The workshop and fair saw enthusiastic attendance from many schools around Tobago, including Hope Anglican Primary School and Mason Hall High School. This significant day served to highlight the ongoing importance of literacy and its essential role in adapting to a rapidly changing world.
