Hundreds on the Breadline as Digicel Closes Loop News and SportsMax: Future of Digicel in T&T Questioned

July 11, 2025 – Telecom giant Digicel has announced the immediate closure of its region-wide digital platform, Loop News, a trusted source for millions since 2014. In a double blow to audiences across the Caribbean, the company also confirmed its premier sports channel, SportsMax, will air its final broadcast on August 8th, ending a 22-year run as the self-proclaimed ‘Home of Champions.’ These closures are expected to result in the loss of nearly 100 media jobs across the Caribbean.

The move is part of a major strategic pivot for Digicel. In a statement, Group Chief Business Officer Liam Donnelly thanked the teams and audiences, saying, “While we are proud of the legacy of SportsMax and Loop News, we are now focused on where we can create the greatest value for our customers and the communities we serve.”

Loop News’ final message to readers was a simple, poignant Caribbean farewell: “Walk good.” SportsMax brought major events like the Olympics and Champions League football into Caribbean homes, launching countless broadcasting careers.

The question tonight for many in Trinidad and Tobago is: Is this the beginning of the end of Digicel in Trinidad and Tobago?
