Health Official Alerts Public on Saharan Dust Dangers

February 24, 2026 — A plume of Saharan dust has moved across Trinidad and Tobago, significantly reducing air quality and visibility while triggering urgent respiratory concerns for vulnerable groups. Health official Dr. Renea Alfred is advising residents to take immediate precautions as the dust concentration is expected to persist over the next several days.

The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) has recorded air quality levels reaching the “Unhealthy” category in several areas, with PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations well above safe limits. The haze, which originated from the African continent, has draped the island in a thick grey veil, making landmarks like the Northern Range and Tobago’s coastlines nearly invisible from a distance.

Health Advisory and Precautions

Dr. Alfred has highlighted that the fine particulate matter in the dust can penetrate deep into the lungs, causing inflammation and aggravating pre-existing conditions. Vulnerable individuals—including the elderly, young children, and those with asthma, bronchitis, or sinus issues—are urged to follow these safety guidelines:

  • Limit Outdoor Activity: Stay indoors as much as possible, especially during the peak morning and evening hours when the air is stillest.
  • Wear Protective Masks: If you must go outside, use an N95 or surgical mask to filter out the fine dust particles.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help keep respiratory passages moist.
  • Manage Medications: Ensure that “rescue” inhalers and allergy medications are easily accessible.
  • Close Windows: Keep windows and doors closed to prevent dust from accumulating inside the home.

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) expects the plume to remain over the region until late Thursday, with a slight improvement in conditions anticipated by the weekend. However, officials warn that subsequent waves are common during this time of year and advise the public to remain vigilant.
